Each May, widespread awareness is raised for a rare disease known in its abbreviated form as ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that severely impacts the nervous system. This month, medical communities, families and organizations will be raising awareness to promote further research, advocate for loved ones, and support those affected. Those living with ALS experience reduced muscle functionality due to the breaking down of motor neurons in the brain and spinal cord. When these neurons deteriorate and die, communication between the brain and the body’s muscles is lost. Over time, individuals living with this disease encounter muscle weakness and, eventually, the inability to move those muscles. Weak/stiff muscles, lack of coordination, muscle loss, muscle spasms, difficulty swallowing, mild cognitive impairment, difficulty maintaining weight and overactive reflexes are common symptoms. While medications and therapies can help reduce and prolong severe symptoms, there is no known cure.
